The Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation have looked after Country here for tens of thousands of years. The Yarra River — or Birrarung as it’s known to Elders — isn’t just a backdrop for fitness lovers and rowers; it’s a life source, woven into Dreaming and cultural heritage.
Even today, the way the Victorian Government oversees the city’s expansion, water supply and urban planning is connected with the river. The city’s very groundwork, from regional drainage systems to flood protection and water restrictions, all depend on how we relate to Country. To honour that heritage is to travel mindfully — taking time to learn the stories, not just taking photos of the cityscape.
