The StingRay is an IMSI-catcher with each passive (digital analyzer) and lively (cell-site simulator) capabilities. When operating in energetic mode, the system mimics a wireless service cell tower so as to power all nearby mobile phones and different cellular knowledge units to hook up with it. Hand-carried variations are referred to underneath the trade name KingFish. In lively mode, the StingRay will drive every appropriate cellular system in a given area to disconnect from its service provider cell site (e.g., operated by Verizon, AT&T, etc.) and establish a brand new reference to the StingRay. Most often, this is accomplished by having the StingRay broadcast a pilot signal that's either stronger than, or made to look stronger than, the pilot alerts being broadcast by authentic cell sites operating in the realm. A typical function of all cellular communications protocols is to have the cellular machine connect with the cell site providing the strongest signal. StingRays exploit this operate as a way to power temporary connections with cellular units inside a restricted area.
